The word Schip means ship in Flemish which is important to know as we just pointed out the Schipperke love of boats. The Schipperke was first bred by a captain in Flanders and is actually bred from boat dogs. It also came from the Leauvenaar sheepdog which was bred smaller and smaller until it reached its current size. While it shares a family tree with the Black Sheepdog, it developed alone and has its own unique characteristics.
